Christmas at the Reflecting Pond

There was an air of excitement around the reflecting pond. The pristine mirror like waters reflected so many wonders, so many scenes of holiday beauty. There were it seemed so many ways to believe and to celebrate but a common thread ran through all of the beauty ~ love, happiness, and peace. All of the fur angels pushed forwards to get a glimpse of home and their loved ones, those that had not been so fortunate pushed forwards to share in the love they had missed on earth. A small one that was fairly new pushed forwards then drew back and curled up in the tall sweet grass. The Silver One sensing her sadness looked for her and went to sit beside her.

"Why so sad on such a happy day, Little One?" he asked gently. She looked up with sad eyes, "I had no one to really call mine on earth, but I guess I was lucky. I was looked out for - I had what I needed. Still . . . ." The Silver One draped his head across her shoulders, oh how she loved when he did, she felt protected and safe

She watched longingly as others left for visits a grey sadness settling about her. "Would you like a family for Christmas?" the Silver One asked quietly, "A special human just for you?" She looked up stunned, "How?" she asked in a silent whisper. In answer the Silver One smiled at her.

"I will take you Little One," the Silver One said. "I know a family that would love to give a fur child a home, a child with a tender heart full of love. But they cannot afford another to feed and care for." The Little One pulled back, "if you take me you will miss Christmas with your family." Again the Silver One smiled, "It is Christmas, a time of magic. I will see my family, and for a time you will have a family - know that special love."

Before she could answer they were in a small home - not luxurious, but well kept and warm with love and laughter, rich in the things that really matter most. The Silver One asked quietly, "Can you feel the love and happiness here? They know what matters most." They sat enjoying the lights and decorations and love and happiness. A small child looked under the tree hopefully, "Will I get a kitty or puppy this year?" His parents looked sadly at his hopeful face, and shook their heads, "Maybe next year honey," his mom said. "Now it is time you went to bed." As he headed for his bed the Silver One looked at his small companion, "Go with him, curl up with him as he sleeps and visit him in his dreams. For tonight - you are his."

The Little One woke in the morning back at Rainbow Bridge, next to the reflecting pond. She knew it had only been a night, but somehow they had shared a lifetime. Back on earth a small boy woke, he knew he would not get a puppy or kitten this Christmas, but for one special night he had a furbaby that he loved and who loved him, and they had somehow shared a lifetime. The Little One looked up and saw the Silver One smiling, "How?" she asked. Then she stopped, "Does this mean I have someone of my own? I have someone to wait for?" The Silver One looked at her and smiled. "Christmas Eve is magical, Little One. And yes - you will wait for him now." The Little One moved closer to the reflecting pond to watch her little boy. The Silver One looked on quietly. "Merry Christmas, Little One.", then he said softly to the Wind that Whispers "Thank you."
